We did the tourist thing and took a guided boat tour of the lower part of the Gunnison,  You have to walk down into the canyon on a path that has 232 steps and then hike down-river about 1/2 a mile.  This is the lowest rest platform.  Toward the end of the slide show I'll point it out from an overlook above for perspective.
